A busy holiday for the PWW

The news doesn’t stop for the holidays and, this year, neither did the World’s coverage. Even though there was no print edition of the paper, readers were able to keep up with important stories at pww.org.

The Online eXtra was launched last May and is a regularly updated source of breaking coverage and a place to read stories that aren’t available in the print edition. The past two weeks saw a flurry of stories on the eXtra — everything from a series of articles about the New York City transit strike to book reviews.

The headlines on the Online eXtra reflect the World’s broad coverage of the news. Online readers accessed articles with headlines like “Urgent appeal to protest jailing of Iranian trade unionists,” “Cuba’s revolutionary doctors,” “Sen. Boxer mulls impeachment” and “NYC transit workers forced to strike!”

Throughout the holiday break, over 20 new stories were available online. Readers can still read these stories at pww.org. Just click on “Online eXtra” on the left side of the homepage.

The great coverage wasn’t the only news for the World in recent weeks, though. Due to an overwhelmingly positive response to our direct mail appeal, the editorial board decided to extend the 2005 Fund Drive to Jan. 31. The drive was originally scheduled to end on Dec. 31, but money was still pouring in at the end of the year. A number of events to benefit the Fund Drive are also scheduled in January (check “What’s On” for more information).

There have also been a number of technical advances in the PWW’s business office that we wanted to take advantage of before the Fund Drive was over. Our new subscriber database and new accounting software have both made the operations more efficient and will continue to make it easier for the World to provide quality service to readers and supporters.

Of course, everything — from the Online eXtra to the weekly print edition — costs money. The Fund Drive is your chance to show your support for all the work that the PWW does throughout the year. To donate to the 2005 Fund Drive, send your contribution to PWW, 235 W. 23rd St., New York NY 10011, or visit pww.org before the end of the month.
