The Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) is mourning the loss of martyred trade unionist and member of the Oil and Gas Workers Union, Ali Hassan Abd (Abu Fahad), assassinated Feb. 18 by terrorist extremists while returning with his children to his home in Baghdad, near the Al Dorah Oil Refinery.
In a statement issued Feb. 21, the IFTU Executive Committee said it “condemns this cowardly act and resolves to continue to organize for free, democratic and independent unions. The IFTU pledges to its martyred hero Abu Fahad to carry on organizing workers and also for a new and democratic Iraq.”
The labor federation called Fahad a courageous unionist and said he was one of the first to organize the union at the Al Dorah Oil Refinery in April 2003.
The IFTU urged the international trade union movement to condemn Fahad’s murder.
