NEW YORK — Joyful November is throwing a benefit bash to raise funds for Downtown For Democracy and to recruit volunteers for various activist groups working on voter turnout and registration during the final crucial month leading up to Election Day 2004.

The event will be held in The Great Hall at Cooper Union on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. Performers include Lou Reed, Mandy Patinkin, Maggie Moore, Bill T. Jones, Trisha Brown, Richard Move, Will Power, Mark Crispin Miller, Lisa Kron, DJ Bald Bastard and many more.

This unusual event is not only a fundraiser but also a rousing call for solidarity and an effort to get people energized and mobilized. Grassroots organizations will be on hand to sign you up and send you out to register voters, call, write or go to swing states to get out the votes where they are most critical and work in many other ways to bring a new administration into the White House.

Downtown For Democracy (D4D) is a political action committee mobilizing the creative community and turning cultural influence into political power — money, visibility and votes. Proceeds from the event will help support D4D’s voter registration and outreach efforts in the swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania and place D4D’s print ads, sure to be among the most talked about ads of this political season. Mikhail Baryshnikov, Toni Morrison and Jessye Norman have endorsed this event.
