As you likely know, we have been experiencing heavy delays in the delivery of subscriptions to you, our readers.
This has been going on for some time, since we began shipping the People’s Weekly World from Chicago. We have traced the trouble to the Chicago post office, but the issue is endemic. Across the country, postal processing facilities have been consolidated, against the wishes of the postal workers’ unions, into understaffed super centers. Other small, national publications have reported the same troubles.
We are currently in the midst of an experiment in which we are sending subscriber copies of the paper in several key markets via first class mail. If this works, we may be forced to switch to using that standard service, as it does not appear that there is likely to be a bettering of the situation with periodicals rate mail.
Of course, you know that the news and views provided in the PWW are indispensable. This includes our coverage of the labor movement in print and online (www.pww.org, go there for up-to-the minute coverage of the Republic factory occupation!), as well as the presidential election, the current transition period and the broad struggles for peace, democracy, equality and socialism.
All of this takes money, but, given the current mailing situation and the need for experiments with first class mail—in order to get the paper to you on time—we need even more money.
We’re at $134,000 in our $200,000 fund drive.
Won’t you help us to make sure that we can both put together such a necessary paper and make sure that everyone who wants it can get it?
With your help, the PWW will continue its ongoing path of improvement.
