Illinois budget crisis: What to do?

CHICAGO – “The Illinois budget crisis: Taking action to protect people’s needs” will be the theme of a forum to be held Thursday, May 15. Currently the State of Illinois faces a budget deficit of nearly $5 billion in 2004. But the Illinois government is taking the wrong way out of the crisis, trying to balance the budget on the backs of those least able to pay.

Panelists will address this severe crisis and alternatives for solving it. They include Dina Zarrella, director, Childrens Project, Campaign for Better Healthcare; Rene Maxwell, Coalition to Protect Public Housing; Emma Lozano, Centro Sin Fronteras; Andrea Ingram, director, Budget and Tax Policy, Voices 4 Illinois Kids; and Fred Gaboury, Communist Party USA and correspondent, People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo.

Panel presentations will be followed by questions and discussion.

Admission is $3 donation. Sponsored by the People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo.
