Rebel Souls: Day of the Dead celebration (with video)

The Day of the Dead celebration Nov. 1 at Workers Center in Los Angeles, California honored the now-passed “rebel souls” who dedicated their entire lives to creating a better world for everyone.

Day of the Dead is a 2,000-year-old indigenous tradition practiced mainly in Mexico and Central America. It was believed that on this day a portal would open between our world and the spirit world and our ancestors would travel back and reconnect in festive celebration sharing music, food, and memories. It also embodies the concept that death is not the end but rather a part of a never-ending cycle of existence.

This event in Los Angeles focused on rescuing the original concept of indigenous traditions and to the using of those traditions to counter the current trend toward consumerism and commercialization of all cultural traditions.
