Sometimes we just don’t want to be bothered by a telemarketer. But this weekend your phone is going to ring and on the other end will be a volunteer for the People’s Weekly World asking you to help us raise $200,000 by Jan. 29.

Volunteers will be calling from a union-owned, state-of-the-art call center in St. Louis. This will be the first-time the PWW has done a national phone-a-thon utilizing such technology. We’ll be ready to take your donation by credit card.

And volunteers will be donating six hours to this cause because, like you, we know the People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo makes an important contribution to the working-class and democratic battles taking place in our country. And the PWW needs to raise money to keep going and growing.

During the Rev. Martin Luther King holiday weekend, two PWW events were held that raised a good chunk towards realizing the $200,000 goal, as well as raising readers’ fighting resolve for peace and equality. In Chicago, some 130 people came to hear Fernando Suarez del Solar, co-founder of Military Families Speak Out, and to honor local organizations and their work to defeat Bush and his agenda. In Baltimore, a silent auction was held along with honoring Dr. King’s legacy through recitation of his famous Riverside Church speech. An anonymous gift of $10,000 brought the total raised for the weekend’s events to around $14,500.

Now don’t think you have to give $10,000 to make a difference. Our philosophy is “from each according to their ability.” One food service worker, originally from Greece, saved and sacrificed to give the PWW $240. It takes a lot of hands to raise $200,000 for the working-class press. Raise your hand today.
