The Senate is about to vote on the nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis for Secretary of Labor. Rep. Solis has been a long-time champion of worker’s rights, and she’ll bring a strong voice for unions to the Department of Labor.

But Senate Republicans and business interests are lining up against Solis’s nomination. They want to go back to the way things were for the past eight years — when the rights and safety of American workers took a backseat to big business.

You can help make sure that doesn’t happen. Pick up the phone right now, call your Senators, and urge them to confirm Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor:

Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

Hilda Solis is the daughter of a Teamsters shop steward, and she knows how important it is for American workers to be able to organize for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. She is a firm supporter of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would help workers across the country exercise their right to organize.

In 2001, Solis stood with the workers at the Chinese Daily News in Los Angeles who were abused, harassed, and illegally fired by their employer when they voted for representation by The Newspaper Guild-CWA.

And when 400 CWA-represented court interpreters in Los Angeles County were forced to strike in 2007, Rep. Solis was on their side — not only backing their fight for salary fairness, but supporting their cause of ensuring that non-English-speaking citizens receive qualified interpreting services in the court system.

You know how important it is to have a strong advocate for workers heading the Department of Labor. Now tell your Senators:

Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121.

At a time when our economy is in crisis and the middle class is struggling to make ends meet, it’s more important than ever that workers are able to earn living wages and benefits.

Hilda Solis will fight for us — but first we have to fight for her.
