St. Paul, Minn. – The hot dogs and hamburgers – both meat and veggie – were grilled to perfection, the beer and soda were icy cold, and the weather was beautiful. This year’s annual picnic to raise money for the People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo Fund Drive was held here, Aug. 23.
A lively group gathered for good food and a good cause. Over $750 was raised toward the district’s $2,000 goal. The Twin Cities picnic is one of the first in a number of events that will be held around the country by PWW/Mundo supporters.
Jen Barnett, PWW/Mundo circulation manager, attended the picnic as a representative of the Editorial Board. She spoke about the special need for publications like the People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo. As part of the long-standing independent press movement, the PWW/Mundo provides an alternative to the corporate-controlled media.
She noted that the PWW/Mundo isn’t like most papers – it’s openly partisan on the side of the working class. She also said the PWW/Mundo aims not just to inform readers of world events, but to help them get involved in local struggles.
Barnett stressed the importance of readers subscribing to and distributing the PWW/Mundo. Earlier in the day, she had gone on one of the distribution rounds in the Twin Cities, and she applauded their weekly distribution of 2,000 copies.

Mundo Summer Celebration. Each year the event kicks off their work on the Fund Drive; they raised $900 toward their goal.
The People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo Fund Drive has a national goal of $200,000, which is a fraction of what it costs to produce the paper 51 weeks a year. The drive runs from Labor Day to Dec. 15.
