BELEN, (Prensa Latina) Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas was reelected as the head of Fatah during the fifth day of the organization’s Sixth Congress held in this West Bank city, in the presence of 2,000 delegates.
According to Othman Abu Gharbiye, who is presiding over the meeting, Abbas’ approval was unanimous.
The new 21-member Central Committee and 120-member Revolutionary Council will be elected on Sunday.
According to participants, the congress has extended its deliberations due to intensive debates promoted by the younger party members who favor changes and reforms.
At the beginning of the event Abbas recognized mistakes, which caused Fatah to lose the 2006 legislative elections causing it to displaced by the Hamas movement in Gaza’s Strip in June 2007.
