People’s World inspired me to become a volunteer working-class journalist

TO: People’s World Readers

I hope you are doing well, and I thank you for engaging so deeply with People’s World. The reactionary forces are in very strong positions right now, so staying in touch with us is very important.

As the crises in the United States continue to worsen, I’ve grown increasingly frustrated with mainstream news sources. In their reporting I see a callous dismissal of working people’s frustrations with the capitalist system. Healthcare reforms are dismissed for being expensive while the ballooning military and police budgets are ignored or cheered for.

Rallies asking for basic democratic rights are lambasted for being too violent, all the while the violence inherent to our system of private wealth accumulation is treated with kiddy gloves.

Urgent threats to our siblings at home and around the world—such as voting rights and xenophobic demonization campaigns domestically or our country’s brutal sanctions regimes, military strikes, and promotion of antidemocratic economic systems internationally—are routinely ignored and often actively promoted.

Many of us Americans have increasingly sought out alternative news sources, but many of them come with their own issues. Some regurgitate corporate media talking points, others stoke the fires of bigotry more strongly than mainstream communications dare to try.

Even outlets that might not overtly call to pogrom marginalized communities may still verbally call to throw them under the bus to focus on “the most important” issues facing Americans.

Other commentators inexperienced in struggling against reaction urge people to give up against the struggle for liberation in the U.S. Some podcasters frustrated with the status quo may encourage their viewers to pursue individualistic and futile strategies.

People’s World’s strength comes from how our reporting is informed by confrontations with corporate attacks on all sectors of the working class. Our writers understand that attacks on our siblings from the Black, undocumented, queer, immigrant, and international communities interlink with each other to deepen oppression for everybody.

We know that fighting for a better world is never hopeless, and we show that people are struggling every day to build that better world.

All of these strengths of People’s World inspired me to join the struggles against corporate tyranny. If you are as moved by People’s World as I am, I implore you to consider signing up for as a monthly sustainer or make a one-time donation to the People’s World Fund Drive!

Perhaps you or your organization can take out an ad in the upcoming May Day Greetings Book.

With enough consistent income from our supporters, we can afford to expand our staff, broaden our network of volunteers, and widen our coverage. We can deepen our fight against the oligarchs as a voice of the people.

Thank you for your support,
