St. Lawrence Seaway opened June 26, 1959

One June 26, 1959 the 189-mile-long St. Lawrence Seaway opened, making the Great Lakes accessible to Atlantic Ocean shipping.

Thousands of workers toiled for decades to bring the project to fruition.

The St. Lawrence Seaqway today supports 75,000 jobs in Canada and 150,000 in the U.S.
