CHICAGO – In our fourth annual outing, 50 friends and allies here raised $500 for our favorite publication, People’s Weekly World/Nuestro Mundo, by way of rooting for the city’s Southside team, the White Sox, at its June 8 game. The Sox went up against the Detroit Tigers who are currently in first place in the Central Division. Before the game World supporters tailgated at the Unity Center, which hosts the PWW editorial offices, just walking distance from the ballpark. All types of good barbeque – for vegetarians and meat-eaters — were enjoyed. It was an exciting game, as Sox starting pitcher and Cuban-born Jose Contreras nearly pitched a no hitter. The Sox eventually won 6-1. For the fourth consecutive year the Sox pulled off a win as World supporters cheered them on. The weather cooperated and gave us a perfect baseball evening. It’s a fun way to bring World supporters together and raise money for one of the finest working-class publications out there. Next year the Illinois Bureau of the PWW, the organizing committee of the annual event, plans to have an even bigger turnout. We can’t wait. Let’s go Sox!
