The underbelly of America
A homeless camp in Eugene, Oregon, May 2021 / Tyrone Madera (Creative Commons)

Under a concrete bridge lies an independent space.
Worried, weary, broken, broke,
women abused. Overused men.
Lost lives chasing shadows.

Challenging stories. A challenging life.
Homeless camps here and there.
Infested makeshift shelters.
Overcrowded sidewalk nests.

Living symbols of institutional failure.
Immense wealth against homeless mayhem.
Suppressing motivation, innovation, and personal growth.
Unnoticed, unheard just a glance away.

The concrete roof of a freeway underpass.
Too much grief and tension.
Too much stress.
Too much American nonsense.

The underbelly of America.
