Victor Grossman

Victor Grossman (1928-2025) fled his U.S. Army post and defected to the Soviet Union in 1952. He was in danger of reprisals for his Civil Rights, anti-war, and other left-wing activities while a student at Harvard and in Buffalo, New York. After his defection, he lived in the former German Democratic Republic (socialist East Germany). He lived there for the next 38 years, studying journalism, founding a Paul Robeson Archive, and becoming a freelance journalist and author. His most well-known book,  A Socialist Defector: From Harvard to Karl-Marx-Allee, is about his life in the German Democratic Republic, the tremendous improvements for the people under socialism, the reasons the fall of that state, and its relevance to today's struggles. For many years, Victor was the Berlin correspondent for People's World.
