The videos of the sign crews were all over the internet and TV recently. Men on ladders screwing in letters spelling out the name of Donald J. Trump to the façade of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
The Center’s board of trustees had voted (supposedly) unanimously to rename the landmark “The Trump-Kennedy Center.” I scratch your head trying to figure out what connection Donald Trump has to the arts.
John F. Kennedy, though never considering himself an intellectual, hosted dinners for leading people in the arts and sponsored White House performances by notable artists.
But Trump? Let Steve Wynn, the casino magnate whose wife sits on the board, sum it up:
“What I could see is the name is sort of a reflection of the men who have given it its vitality, first, John Kennedy. Now, Donald Trump. Those two guys had more to do with keeping that thing exciting and relevant.”
Recently, the president put his name on the United States Institute of Peace, now known as the Trump Institute of Peace. An absurdity if there ever was one—just ask the innocent Venezuelan fishermen killed off the coast of Venezuela.
These moves may be just the beginning of a tidal wave of name changes that could reshape our nation’s capital—and the country as a whole.
What about the Trump National Archives? Or The Trump National Museum of American History? The Trump National Gallery of Art? The Trump-Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, all to be part of the Trump Smithsonian Institution?
How about the Trump Library of Congress? (Can you imagine what books he would contribute to its collections?)
If that isn’t enough, how about some of the big attractions? The Trump-Lincoln Memorial? The Trump-Washington Monument?
Or even the Donald J. Trump White House? (He’s done enough already to ruin the building.) Maybe the House and Senate could meet beneath the dome of the Trump Capitol Building?
To top it off, why not just redesignate our capital city the “Trump District of Columbia”?
I shudder to think, but it’s not as outlandish as we might think. The out-of-control ego of the current White House occupant means it’s all possible.
